Understanding BMR and TDEE
Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) represents the minimum energy your body needs to function at rest. This includes breathing, blood circulation, cell production, and organ function. BMR typically accounts for 60-75% of your total daily calorie expenditure, making it the single largest factor in how many calories you burn each day.
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) builds on your BMR by adding the calories burned through physical activity, exercise, and the thermic effect of food. To lose weight, eat fewer calories than your TDEE. To gain weight, eat more. To maintain, match it. The relationship is straightforward, but knowing your actual number is essential for making informed dietary decisions.
This calculator offers three established formulas. The Mifflin-St Jeor equation (1990) is the most widely recommended by dietitians and health organisations. The Harris-Benedict equation (revised 1984) is a classic alternative. The Katch-McArdle formula uses lean body mass instead of total weight, making it more accurate for people who know their body fat percentage.
The macro suggestions use a balanced 30/40/30 protein-carb-fat split applied across three calorie targets: cutting (TDEE minus 500), maintenance (TDEE), and bulking (TDEE plus 500). A 500-calorie daily deficit produces roughly 0.5 kg of fat loss per week, while a 500-calorie surplus supports approximately 0.5 kg of weight gain. All calculations happen in your browser.
