Understanding Body Fat Percentage
Body fat percentage is a more useful measure of body composition than weight alone. Two people of the same height and weight can have dramatically different body fat levels depending on muscle mass. A 180-pound person at 15% body fat looks and performs very differently from a 180-pound person at 30% body fat.
The US Navy method was developed by the US Department of Defense and uses circumference measurements of the neck, waist, and hips (for women) combined with height. It is based on the observation that the ratio of these measurements correlates reliably with body fat levels measured by more expensive methods. Accuracy is typically within 3-4% of DEXA scan results.
The BMI-based estimate uses the Deurenberg formula, which derives body fat from BMI, age, and gender. While convenient because it only needs height and weight, it is less accurate for athletes and muscular individuals whose BMI may overstate their body fat. It works best for people with average body composition.
Body fat categories range from Essential Fat (the minimum your body needs to function) through Athletes, Fitness, Average, to Obese. These categories differ between men and women because women naturally carry more essential fat for biological functions. Knowing your category helps you set realistic fitness goals and understand where you stand relative to health guidelines.
