Metric vs imperial length
The metric system
The metric system uses the metre (m) as its base unit of length, defined by the speed of light in vacuum. It scales cleanly by powers of ten: 1 km = 1,000 m, 1 m = 100 cm = 1,000 mm. The metric system is the official measurement system in virtually every country and is used exclusively in science and international trade.
The imperial system
Imperial and US customary systems use inches (in), feet (ft), yards (yd), and miles (mi). One foot equals 12 inches, one yard equals 3 feet, and one mile equals 5,280 feet. These units originated from historical body-based measurements and are still widely used in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada for everyday purposes.
Specialised units
Nautical miles (1,852 m) are standard in aviation and seafaring. Astronomers use light-years and parsecs. Micrometres and nanometres matter in engineering and biology. This tool covers 16 of the most commonly needed units so you can convert between any of them in a single step.
