How to use this tool
Add your materials cost per item, labour time and hourly rate, and any overhead costs like packaging or supplies. Be honest - underestimating costs is the most common pricing mistake.
Choose the profit margin you want to achieve after all fees. 30% is a common starting point. The tool shows you how every fee eats into that margin.
Enter your shipping cost and select your country. Payment processing fees vary by country. If you offer free shipping, set shipping to $0 and add it to your overhead instead.
Check "offsite ads buffer" if you want your price to remain profitable even on offsite ad sales. Check "$10k+" if your annual Etsy revenue exceeds $10,000 for the reduced ad rate.
The table shows your profit at five different price points from -20% to +20% of the recommended price. Use this to find your sweet spot between competitiveness and profitability.
Why pricing matters more than anything else on Etsy
The number one reason Etsy shops fail is not bad photography or weak SEO - it is pricing that does not account for all the fees. Etsy takes a cut at every stage: listing, transaction, payment processing, and potentially offsite ads. A seller who prices at 2x materials cost is often shocked to find their actual margin is under 10% after fees.
This calculator works backwards from your desired profit margin. Instead of guessing a price and hoping the maths works out, you enter your real costs and the margin you need, and the tool tells you the exact price to charge. It uses iterative convergence because Etsy fees are percentage-based - the fee depends on the price, which depends on the fee.
Understanding Etsy's fee structure
Etsy charges four main fees: a $0.20 listing fee per item (renewed on sale), a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping, a payment processing fee that varies by country (3% + $0.25 in the US), and an optional 15% offsite ads fee on sales driven by Etsy's external advertising. For sellers earning over $10,000 annually, the offsite ads fee drops to 12% but becomes mandatory.
The transaction fee applying to shipping is often overlooked. If you charge $5.00 shipping, Etsy takes $0.325 of that. This is why many top Etsy sellers offer free shipping and build the cost into the item price - Etsy also gives a search ranking boost to free-shipping listings.
