When to flip or rotate images
Flipping images is essential for correcting selfie mirrors, creating symmetrical designs, and fixing photos taken with reversed cameras. Horizontal flipping (mirroring) is the most common use — it corrects the left-right reversal that front-facing cameras apply. Vertical flipping is less common but useful for creating reflections, artistic effects, and fixing images scanned upside down. Both operations are completely lossless because they simply remap pixel positions without any resampling.
Understanding image rotation and canvas size
Rotation by exact 90° multiples is lossless and keeps the canvas dimensions unchanged (though width and height swap). Custom angle rotation — like 15°, 30°, or 45° — requires the canvas to expand so the rotated image fits without cropping. The empty corners become transparent (PNG) or filled with white (JPEG). For web images, rotating by a custom angle and exporting as PNG with transparency gives the cleanest result. If you need a filled background, export as JPEG and the corners will be white.
