Why Impact font became the default meme typeface

Impact was bundled with every Windows installation since 1998, making it universally available when the first image macros appeared on forums and early social media. Its ultra-bold, narrow letterforms with built-in tight spacing produce highly readable text at any size — even when overlaid on busy photographs. The convention of white text with a thick black stroke (technically a text outline) ensures legibility against any background colour. This tool replicates that style using Anton, a Google Font with the same condensed bold aesthetic, rendered with configurable stroke width and colours.

Memes are exported as JPEG at 90% quality — the standard for meme sharing. JPEG compression works well with photographic meme templates because it handles gradients and complex colours efficiently. The 90% setting produces sharp text with minimal compression artefacts while keeping file sizes manageable for social media upload limits. For memes that need transparency (rare), you can copy to clipboard as PNG instead.
