How to watermark images to protect your work
Watermarking prevents unauthorised use and establishes ownership of photography and creative work. Text watermarks are simpler and faster โ ideal for copyright notices and @handles. Logo watermarks build brand recognition and look professional for client deliverables. Placement matters: bottom-right is conventional and subtle, centre provides maximum protection but can be intrusive, and tiled diagonal coverage (used by stock photo sites) makes removal extremely difficult. The opacity trade-off is straightforward โ too transparent and it's easy to remove, too solid and it ruins the image. The 30โ50% range works for most purposes.
Text watermark vs logo watermark โ which should you use?
Text watermarks are fast, require no logo file, and work well for copyright notices and social handles. Logo watermarks build brand recognition and look more professional, but require a PNG with a transparent background. For photographers, a logo watermark in bottom-right at 30โ40% opacity is the standard approach. For content creators sharing drafts or confidential work, a โConfidentialโ or โDraftโ text watermark at 60โ70% opacity tiled across the image ensures the content can't be used without permission.
