Understanding the Hijri Calendar
The Hijri calendar, also known as the Islamic or lunar calendar, is the principal calendar used across the Muslim world for religious observances. It consists of 12 months alternating between 29 and 30 days, totalling 354 days in a regular year and 355 in a leap year. Because it is purely lunar, the Hijri calendar does not align with the solar Gregorian calendar and shifts approximately 10 to 11 days earlier each Gregorian year.
The calendar begins from the Hijra, the migration of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. Years are designated AH (Anno Hegirae). Key religious events including Ramadan, the two Eids, and the Hajj pilgrimage are determined by the Hijri calendar. This converter uses the tabular Islamic calendar algorithm, a mathematical method based on a 30-year cycle, to provide consistent and reliable date conversions entirely in your browser.
Each Hijri month carries historical and spiritual significance. Muharram is the first month and one of four sacred months in which warfare was traditionally forbidden. Ramadan, the ninth month, is the month of fasting observed by Muslims worldwide. Dhul Hijjah, the twelfth month, contains the Hajj pilgrimage and Eid al-Adha. Understanding these months and their Gregorian equivalents helps with planning events, travel, and religious observance across both calendar systems.
