Why PDF metadata matters for SEO and privacy
PDF metadata is embedded information that describes a document โ title, author, subject, keywords, and creation details. Search engines like Google index PDF files and use this metadata to determine relevance and display titles in search results. A PDF with a well-crafted title and relevant keywords has a better chance of ranking than one with a blank or auto-generated title like โMicrosoft Word โ Document1.docxโ.
For privacy, PDF metadata can reveal more than intended. Author names, software versions, company names embedded in the Producer field, and creation timestamps can all leak sensitive information. Stripping metadata before sharing documents publicly is a common security practice, especially for legal documents, contracts, and press releases.
What metadata fields can you edit?
The four editable fields โ Title, Author, Subject, and Keywords โ are part of the PDF Info dictionary and XMP metadata streams. These are the fields that matter most for search engine discovery and document management systems. The Creator and Producer fields identify the software that generated the PDF (e.g. Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word) and are read-only in most editing scenarios. Date fields are set automatically when the document is created or modified.
