Understanding PDF rendering and DPI

PDF files are vector-based documents that can be rendered at any resolution. When converting a PDF page to a raster image (JPEG or PNG), the DPI (dots per inch) setting determines the pixel dimensions of the output. At 72 DPI — the default screen resolution — a standard A4 page produces an image of roughly 595 by 842 pixels. At 150 DPI, the same page becomes 1240 by 1754 pixels, and at 300 DPI it reaches 2480 by 3508 pixels. Higher DPI means sharper text and graphics, but also larger file sizes.

JPEG vs PNG for PDF conversion

JPEG uses lossy compression that works well for PDF pages containing photographs, scanned documents, or complex colour gradients. The quality slider lets you balance file size against visual fidelity — 90% is usually indistinguishable from the original. PNG uses lossless compression and is the better choice for PDFs with sharp text, technical diagrams, or line art where JPEG compression artefacts would be noticeable. PNG files are typically 3 to 5 times larger than equivalent JPEG files, but they preserve every pixel exactly.
