What is a good Instagram engagement rate — and how does yours compare?
Engagement rate is calculated by dividing the total engagements on a post (likes, comments, and sometimes saves) by the total number of followers, then multiplying by 100. A 3% engagement rate means that 3 in every 100 followers engaged with the post.
The number only makes sense in context. A 3% rate is excellent for an account with 500,000 followers and mediocre for an account with 2,000. Engagement rate naturally declines as follower count grows — large audiences are inevitably less engaged on average than small, highly targeted ones. This is why the industry uses follower tier benchmarks rather than a single universal standard.
The most important insight from engagement rate data is the direction of travel. A declining engagement rate over several months — even if still within the “good” range — signals that content is resonating less with the audience. A rising rate signals the opposite.
This calculator uses the standard and extended formula (which includes saves) and compares your result against tier-specific benchmarks. Use it alongside our Instagram Bio Optimizer, Instagram Caption Formatter, and Instagram Story Safe Zone Checker for a complete Instagram toolkit.
