How Instagram banned hashtags affect your reach — and how to avoid them
Instagram maintains a list of banned and restricted hashtags that it does not publicise. Using a banned hashtag in a post does not remove the post, but it suppresses its reach — sometimes significantly. The platform may also suppress reach for posts that use large numbers of low-quality hashtags like “#followforfollow” or “#like4like”, which are associated with engagement pods and inauthentic behaviour.
The banned hashtag list changes constantly. Hashtags are added without announcement. Some are permanently blocked; others are temporarily restricted during specific periods. A hashtag that was clean last month may be restricted today.
The safest strategy is to use 3–10 highly targeted, niche-relevant hashtags rather than a large set of generic popular hashtags. This approach avoids the reach suppression associated with high-volume hashtag use and is more likely to reach genuinely interested audiences in your specific niche.
