LinkedIn allows up to 3,000 characters per post. This includes spaces, line breaks, emojis, and hashtags. While the platform does not enforce a hard limit on words, only about 210 characters (roughly three lines) are visible before LinkedIn adds a "see more" link. Everything after that fold is hidden until the reader clicks. This means your first 210 characters function as a headline and determine whether anyone reads the rest. Posts between 800 and 1,300 characters tend to perform best because they are long enough to deliver value but short enough that readers finish them. Posts over 2,000 characters can still perform well if the content is structured with white space, but engagement rates tend to drop as length increases beyond that point.

Start with a hook that creates curiosity or tension in the first three lines. Use short paragraphs of one to three sentences separated by blank lines for visual breathing room. Break up long sections with line breaks so mobile readers can scan easily. End with a clear call to action, either a direct question or an invitation to comment. Avoid walls of text. Avoid starting your post with "I am excited to announce" or similar weak openers that LinkedIn users scroll past. Place your hashtags at the very end, separated from the body by one blank line, and use three to five relevant hashtags. If you need to share a link, put it in the first comment rather than the post body because LinkedIn reduces the reach of posts containing external URLs.

LinkedIn shows your post to a small test audience first, typically five to ten percent of your followers. If that group does not engage within the first sixty to ninety minutes, the algorithm stops distributing the post further. The most common reasons for low views are a weak hook that does not earn clicks on "see more," posting at low-activity times like late evening or weekends, including an external link in the post body which LinkedIn penalises because it sends people off-platform, using too many or irrelevant hashtags, and writing content that does not invite comments. Comments are the strongest engagement signal on LinkedIn. A post that receives ten comments in the first hour will reach far more people than a post with fifty likes and zero comments. Focus on ending your post with a question that makes people want to share their perspective.

The highest engagement windows on LinkedIn are Tuesday through Thursday between 8:00 and 10:00 AM in your audience’s local timezone. Wednesday morning consistently shows the highest average engagement across most industries. Monday mornings are also strong but slightly lower because people are catching up on weekend messages. Friday afternoons and weekends see the lowest engagement. However, the best time depends on your specific audience. If you post content aimed at executives, early morning before 8 AM can work well because they check LinkedIn before meetings. If your audience is in multiple timezones, aim for a time that catches the morning window in both the US East Coast and Western Europe, which is around 7:00 to 8:00 AM Eastern Time.

Avoid putting links directly in your LinkedIn post body. LinkedIn’s algorithm penalises posts with external links because the platform wants to keep users on LinkedIn rather than sending them to other websites. Posts with external URLs typically receive 40 to 50 percent less reach than posts without them. The recommended approach is to write your post without any links, then add the link as the first comment immediately after publishing. You can mention "Link in the first comment" at the end of your post so readers know where to find it. Some creators also use the "Edit post" workaround: publish the post without a link, wait a few minutes for initial distribution, then edit the post to add the link. This can partially avoid the algorithmic penalty, although LinkedIn has been reducing the effectiveness of this technique.
