How Reddit Markdown differs from standard

Superscript is unique to Reddit

Use ^word for single words or ^(phrase with spaces) for multi-word superscript. Standard Markdown does not support this syntax.

Spoilers use Reddit syntax

How Reddit Markdown formatting works

Reddit comments and self-text posts use a variant of Markdown for all text formatting. Unlike a rich-text editor where you highlight text and click a bold button, Markdown uses plain-text symbols to indicate how the text should render. Double asterisks around a word make it bold, single asterisks make it italic, and tildes add strikethrough. These symbols are stripped out when the comment is displayed, leaving only the formatted result.

Reddit’s implementation adds several features not found in standard Markdown or CommonMark. The caret symbol creates superscript text, which Reddit users frequently employ for asides and footnotes. The spoiler syntax hides text behind a black overlay that the reader must click to reveal. And the table syntax, borrowed from GitHub Flavoured Markdown, allows structured data presentation within comments and posts.

How do I format text on Reddit?+

Reddit uses its own flavour of Markdown for text formatting. You wrap words in asterisks for italic (*italic*) or double asterisks for bold (**bold**). Backticks create inline code, and triple backticks or four-space indentation create code blocks. You can also add links with [text](url) syntax, create ordered and unordered lists, add blockquotes with the > prefix, and insert horizontal rules with three dashes. All of these work in both comments and post bodies on both New Reddit and Old Reddit.

How do I make a table on Reddit?+

Reddit tables use pipe characters to separate columns and a header separator row made of dashes. Start with a header row like | Column 1 | Column 2 |, then add a separator row like |---|---| immediately below it, followed by your data rows using the same pipe format. The separator row is mandatory — without it Reddit treats your text as a regular paragraph. You can also align columns by adding colons to the separator: |:---| for left, |:---:| for centre, and |---:| for right alignment.

Is Reddit Markdown the same as regular Markdown?+

At the same time, Reddit does not support some standard Markdown features — most notably, image embedding with ![alt](url) does not work in comments.
