How TikTok captions work — and why they’re different from Instagram
TikTok captions live in a completely different context from Instagram captions. On Instagram, a caption sits below the image in a scrollable feed. On TikTok, the caption is overlaid on the video itself — competing for attention with the video content, the audio, and the right-sidebar engagement buttons. The first line of your caption is the only text most viewers will ever read.
TikTok truncates captions at roughly the first 150 visible characters on the For You page. Everything after that is hidden behind a “more” tap. Hashtags count toward that limit, which means every #tag you add takes space away from your caption text. This is fundamentally different from Instagram, where hashtags can be buried in a comment or separated by line breaks after 2,200 characters of caption space.
This tool gives you a live TikTok phone preview so you can see exactly how your caption will appear in the feed overlay. It tracks your combined character budget (caption + hashtags vs. 150), scores your first-line hook for scroll-stopping power, and gives you TikTok-specific hashtag guidance. Use it alongside our Instagram Caption Formatter, Reel Hook Scorer, and Character Counter for a complete social content toolkit.
