YouTube chapters are created by adding timestamps in your video description. For chapters to work, you need at least 3 timestamps, the first timestamp must be 0:00, each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long, and timestamps must be in ascending order. When properly formatted, YouTube displays clickable chapter markers on the video progress bar, allowing viewers to jump to specific sections. Chapters also appear in Google search results as key moments, which can significantly increase click-through rates from search.

The first 157 characters should include your primary keyword or topic, a specific value proposition (what the viewer will learn or gain), and ideally a call to action or link. Avoid starting with generic openers like "Hey guys, welcome back" — these waste your most visible real estate. Instead, lead with something like "Learn the 5 camera settings that make cinematic footage" or "The complete beginner’s guide to home studio setup". This approach improves both SEO and viewer engagement.

YouTube recommends using 3–5 hashtags per video, placed at the end of your description. YouTube displays the first 3 hashtags above your video title as clickable blue links. You can use up to 15 hashtags effectively, but if you exceed 30 hashtags, YouTube ignores all of them. Place hashtags on the last line of your description for the cleanest formatting. Use a mix of broad topic hashtags and specific niche hashtags for maximum discoverability.
