YouTube SEO in 2025 — the 15 factors that actually matter
YouTube SEO is the practice of optimising a video so that YouTube’s algorithm understands what it is about, surfaces it to the right audience, and ranks it above competing videos for relevant searches. Unlike Google SEO, which is primarily text-based, YouTube SEO combines metadata signals (title, description, tags) with performance signals (CTR, watch time, engagement) and channel authority signals (posting consistency, topical focus).
A video that is perfectly optimised on metadata but has weak watch time will be outranked by a less-optimised video with strong retention. This means YouTube SEO has to be approached holistically. The 15 factors in this checklist cover the full picture: discoverability, engagement, watch time, and channel signals.
The most commonly missed items are: chapters (which improve retention and add metadata), end screens (which improve session time), and pinned comments (which drive early engagement signals). These three alone can meaningfully improve a video’s performance with under 10 minutes of additional work per upload.
