Why your thumbnail text matters more than you think
YouTube thumbnails are displayed at five different sizes across desktop, mobile, sidebar, home feed, and end screens. Text that looks perfectly readable in your design tool at 1280×720 can become illegible when YouTube renders it at 120×90 pixels — the smallest display size. This is the single most common thumbnail mistake: designing for full size without checking how it looks small.
Research on top-performing YouTube channels shows a clear pattern: the highest-CTR thumbnails use 1–6 bold words with high contrast against the background. Every additional word forces the text to be proportionally smaller, reducing readability at small sizes. The best thumbnail text is large enough to read on a phone screen held at arm's length.
This checker scores your thumbnail across four measurable factors: text density (word count), text-to-background contrast, text size relative to the frame, and aspect ratio. Upload your image to see it rendered at all five YouTube display sizes, or describe your design if you're still in the planning stage.
