What is the Flesch-Kincaid readability test?
The Flesch-Kincaid readability tests were developed by Rudolf Flesch and J. Peter Kincaid in the mid-20th century. They remain the most widely used readability metrics in the English language, built into Microsoft Word, used by the US military and government, and referenced by SEO tools including Yoast.
The tests produce two scores from the same inputs β average sentence length and average syllables per word. The Flesch Reading Ease score runs from 0 to 100: higher is easier. A score of 60-70 is the target for web content aimed at a general audience. The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level translates the same data into an approximate US school grade, making it easier to communicate a target to writers and editors.
Both scores penalise the same writing habits: long sentences and long words. Improving readability almost always comes down to one of two things β breaking long sentences or replacing multisyllabic words with shorter ones. Use this tool alongside our Readability + SEO Scorer, Passive Voice Detector, and Sentence Length Analyser for a complete readability audit.
