How long should a paragraph be for web content?
The answer depends on where the content will be read. In print, paragraphs of 5–8 sentences are standard and work well because the eye adapts to the column width and page format. On a screen — particularly on mobile, where a single paragraph can fill the entire viewport — long paragraphs feel overwhelming.
Most web content style guides recommend 3–4 sentences per paragraph for general audiences. Yoast SEO, the dominant WordPress readability plugin, flags paragraphs exceeding 150 words as too long and treats this as a signal that may affect readability scores. For content targeting mobile readers, some guides go even further, recommending 1–2 sentences per paragraph in the most accessible style.
The underlying principle is that shorter paragraphs give readers visual breathing room. Each blank line is a rest point — an invitation to continue reading. Removing those rest points creates a wall of text that readers skim or abandon. Use this tool alongside our sentence length analyser, passive voice detector, and readability scorer for comprehensive content editing.
