Why sentence length variety makes writing easier to read
Sentence length is one of the most reliable indicators of writing quality. Not because long sentences are bad or short sentences are good — but because variety is what makes prose readable. A reader’s eye moves differently through a short sentence than a long one. Alternating between the two creates the kind of natural rhythm that holds attention without the reader consciously noticing why.
Most style guides recommend an average sentence length of 15–20 words for general audiences, with significant variation around that average. Hemingway wrote at an average of around 10 words per sentence. Academic writing often runs 20–25 words. The sweet spot for web content — where readers skim more than they read — is generally 15–20 words, with frequent short sentences of 5–8 words to provide breathing points.
This tool makes sentence length visible. The bar chart shows rhythm across the whole piece in a single glance, making outliers — runaway long sentences and fragmentary short ones — immediately obvious. Use it alongside our passive voice detector, transition word checker, and readability scorer for comprehensive content editing.
