How to count syllables -- and why it matters
A syllable is a unit of sound in a word -- a single, unbroken vowel sound and the consonants grouped around it. βCatβ has one syllable. βButterβ has two: but-ter. βBeautifulβ has three: beau-ti-ful. Syllable counting matters in several contexts.
In poetry, syllable counts define form. A haiku has three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. A sonnet line has 10 syllables (in iambic pentameter). A limerick has a strict syllabic pattern that gives it its characteristic bounce. Poets and songwriters count syllables constantly -- to fit words to a melody, to maintain a metre, or to test whether a revised line preserves the original rhythm.
In readability analysis, average syllables per word is one of the two inputs to the Flesch-Kincaid readability formulas. More syllables per word means a harder reading experience. Writers improving their readability score need to know which words are driving the syllable count up. Use this tool alongside our Flesch-Kincaid Calculator, Word Counter, and Reading Time Estimator for a complete text analysis.
