What are transition words and why do they matter for SEO?
Transition words are words and phrases that link ideas together and guide the reader from one point to the next. Words like “however,” “therefore,” “in addition,” and “for example” signal the relationship between sentences and paragraphs — whether one idea contrasts with another, follows from it, or provides an example of it.
For SEO, transition words matter for two reasons. First, they improve readability, which is increasingly a ranking signal. Google’s quality guidelines emphasise content that is easy to read and understand. Second, Yoast SEO — the most widely used WordPress SEO plugin — explicitly measures transition word percentage as a readability metric, flagging content where fewer than 30% of sentences contain a transition word.
The recommended range is 25–35%. Below 25% and content tends to feel choppy or disconnected. Above 35–40% and it can feel formulaic or over-structured. This tool calculates your percentage, shows exactly which words were found, and highlights which categories of transition — contrast, sequence, cause and effect — are missing from your writing. Use it alongside our passive voice detector, word frequency counter, and readability scorer for comprehensive content editing.
