How to use word frequency analysis for SEO content
Word frequency analysis is a practical tool for content writers and SEOs. When you are optimising a piece of content for a target keyword, knowing how many times that keyword appears — and what percentage of total words it represents — tells you whether you are over- or under-using it.
A keyword density of 1–2% is generally considered healthy for primary keywords. Below 0.5% and the word may not register as a meaningful signal to search engines. Above 3–4% and the content may read as keyword-stuffed, which Google penalises.
Beyond SEO, word frequency analysis helps editors spot overused vocabulary. If "very" appears 14 times in a 600-word article, that is a signal to vary the language. If "content" appears 20 times in a 400-word piece about content marketing, the writer may want to vary their terminology.
The stop word filter is important for this kind of analysis. Words like "the", "and", "is", and "a" will always dominate any frequency table — filtering them out reveals the words that actually carry meaning.
