Understanding Upwork Fees in 2025
Upwork uses a sliding service fee structure that decreases as you bill more with each individual client. This incentivises long-term client relationships and rewards freelancers who build ongoing partnerships rather than chasing one-off projects.
The first $500 you bill with any new client is charged at 20%. This is the highest tier and applies to every new client relationship. For small one-off projects under $500, your effective fee rate is always 20%.
From $500.01 to $10,000 the fee drops to 10%. This is where most freelancers spend the majority of their billing cycle with clients. Building relationships that push past the $500 threshold quickly is one of the most effective ways to reduce your average fee rate.
Above $10,000 the fee drops to 5%, which is competitive with most payment processing platforms. Freelancers who maintain long-term retainer clients at this tier enjoy significantly higher net earnings per dollar billed.
The key insight most freelancers miss is that these tiers reset with each client. A freelancer with five clients at $2,000 each pays a much higher blended rate than one freelancer billing $10,000 to a single client. This calculator helps you model both scenarios.
