Understanding cryptocurrency prices and market data
Cryptocurrency prices change constantly โ sometimes by double-digit percentages within a single day. Unlike stock markets that close at the end of the trading session, crypto markets operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across hundreds of exchanges worldwide. The prices shown in this tool are aggregated from those exchanges by CoinGecko, which is widely regarded as one of the most reliable sources of cryptocurrency market data.
Market capitalisation is the most widely used metric for ranking cryptocurrencies. It is calculated by multiplying the current price by the total circulating supply. A coin with a high market cap is generally considered more established and less volatile than one with a low market cap, though volatility is still significant compared to traditional assets. Bitcoin consistently holds the top position by market cap, typically accounting for 40% to 60% of the total crypto market.
The 24h percentage change tells you how much a coinโs price has moved in the last 24 hours. Green figures indicate a price increase; red figures indicate a decrease. This metric is useful for spotting short-term momentum, but it should never be used in isolation. A coin up 20% today may simply be recovering from a 30% drop yesterday. Context matters enormously in crypto markets.
24h high and low show the range of prices recorded across all tracked exchanges over the past 24 hours. A wide gap between the high and low indicates high volatility for that period. When the current price is close to the 24h high, it may suggest recent buying pressure; when it is near the 24h low, it may indicate selling pressure, though technical analysis of this kind is inherently speculative.
A note on data accuracy: Prices shown here are indicative and may differ slightly from the price you see on a specific exchange, because different exchanges have different liquidity and slightly different prices at any given moment. Prices are also not streamed in real time on this free tool โ they are fetched on page load and when you click refresh. For live price monitoring suitable for active trading, use your exchangeโs native interface or a paid data feed. This tool is ideal for quick reference checks, not for executing trades.
